Eight months after US forces seized Nicolás Maduro, his successor stood at the UN and thanked Donald Trump.

Claim: On Tuesday 22 September 2026 Donald Trump told the UN General Assembly that in January US forces went into Caracas and arrested Nicolás Maduro, that "last month, we signed the largest oil deal in history, covering 65 billion barrels", and: "It was a war, but it's perhaps the biggest deal ever made. To the victor belong the spoils." On Wednesday 23 September Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodríguez, at the same rostrum, thanked "President Donald Trump and his government for their readiness to resume the course of diplomatic relations and cooperation", called the agreement one of the most significant ever signed between the two countries, and said: "In Venezuela, there will be elections."
