The Market Was Open At 8:40. By Nine It Was Gone.
At twenty to nine on the morning of 26 August 2026, the shops at Timure were opening. The market sat where it had always sat, on the bank of the Bhote Koshi, a few hundred metres from the bridge to China.
By nine there was no market. The water took the stalls, the customs yard, the vehicles parked at the border, and the bridge itself. Whole settlements along the river were gone.
A health worker in Rasuwa told Reuters: "There is devastation everywhere we look. The settlements next to the river have been completely swept away. Five of my own relatives are missing."
By Thursday Nepali police had recovered 157 bodies. Around 600 local people were still unaccounted for, along with 579 travellers - 466 of them foreign. Among the missing: 47 Americans, 34 Australians, more than 100 Indians, and Britons, Canadians, Malaysians, South Africans, Dutch and South Koreans. Nine armed police officers who had been on duty at the Timure border post are also missing. Across the river in Tibet, Chinese authorities reported 3 dead and 265 missing at the Gyirong crossing.
There had been no rain. High on the Tibetan side a slab of rock and ice roughly 600 metres wide came off a mountain, fell into the Lhende Khola, dammed it, and the dam gave way. Nobody downstream had any reason to look up.
THE ANGLE — the causal arrow is backwards
Global coverage said an earthquake triggered the avalanche that caused the flood. The evidence says the opposite: the USGS M4.4 at 08:37 NPT (later Ms 5.2) is most likely the landslide itself radiating seismic energy — not a tectonic quake that set one off. Nepal's foreign minister's early line, re-wired worldwide, has cause and effect inverted. Petley's Landslide Blog, on Planet 25-vs-26 Aug imagery: "There is no evidence that this was a GLOF." Safe formulation for the reel: an avalanche of rock and ice dammed a tributary, and the dam burst; the cause is still being established.

Wed 26 Aug 2026: a catastrophic debris flow tore down the Bhote Koshi from the Tibetan side of the Nepal-China border, hitting Timure and the Rasuwagadhi crossing about 09:00 NPT, then running down the Trishuli through Syabrubesi, Mailung and Betrawati into Nuwakot and Dhading. CAUSE (central task, now resolvable): best-supported account is a rock-and-ice avalanche off a glacier near 28.28N 85.52E in the Gyirong area of Tibet, which fell into the Lhende Khola, a Bhote Koshi tributary, dammed it and burst. Planet before/after imagery (25 vs 26 Aug) read by geologist Dan Shugar and Dave Petley's Landslide Blog, which states "there is no evidence that this was a GLOF." USGS logged M4.4 at 08:37 NPT (later Ms 5.2); the reinterpretation is that this shaking WAS the landslide radiating seismic energy, not a quake that triggered one — so the foreign minister's "earthquake triggered an avalanche" has the causal arrow backwards. Kathmandu University's Rijan Bhakta Kayastha: ice avalanche, possibly plus a glacial-lake burst. NDRRMA's Shanti Mahat: "only an initial assessment." DHM: a GLOF "may have occurred," but no heavy rain fell in Rasuwa on 25-26 Aug. So: rainfall ruled out, avalanche-dammed river best supported, GLOF unconfirmed. Nepal Tourism Board: 384 out of contact, 291 foreign and 93 Nepali, including 105+ Indians, 47 Americans, 12 Britons, 8-9 South Koreans, Malaysians, an Australian; plus 85 security personnel and 60 hydropower staff.
