Janmashtami: The 46 Minutes India Waits For
Tonight at three minutes to midnight a 46-minute window opens, and millions of Indians have arranged their whole day around it. This is Krishna Janmashtami.
What is happening: the Nishita muhurat runs 23:57 to 00:43, and only inside it is the idol bathed in panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, sugar and ghee), dressed in new clothes, and laid in a cradle. Mathura, where Krishna was born, and Vrindavan, where he grew up, are the centre of it; at the Banke Bihari temple the crowd gets dense enough that police run one-way lanes through the old town. For the first time, 500 drones will draw Krishna's story across the Mathura sky tonight.
Tomorrow the festival changes character. In Mumbai, pots of curd are strung high above the street and teams called Govindas climb on each other's shoulders to break them, because the boy in the story stole butter. Krishna = eighth avatar of Vishnu. Born at midnight in a prison cell in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. Kansa (Devaki's brother, king of Mathura) was warned her eighth child would kill him and killed the earlier children. On the eighth birth the guards slept, the locks opened, and Vasudeva carried the newborn across a flooded Yamuna to Gokul.
The ritual
