Pakistan at the UN: Touch the Indus and It's "An Act of War". India: Terror "Will Have Consequences"

Pakistan's prime minister told the UN what his country would treat as an act of war. Hours later, India answered from the same hall.

On 25 September, at the UN General Assembly, Shehbaz Sharif said: "Any attempt to stop, impede or divert Pakistan's share of the waters will be treated as an act of war. India must make no mistake about it." India has held the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance since the Pahalgam attack in April 2025; Sharif says that has no legal basis. That evening, in India's right of reply, First Secretary Petal Gahlot said: "Our right to defend ourselves against terrorism will be exercised, and continued terrorism by Pakistan will have consequences." Pakistan's Counsellor Saima Saleem replied that India had "stooped to a new low of weaponizing water."
