All Four Engines Stopped Over Java. That's Why Jakarta Just Shut.

Anak Krakatau erupted for about twenty five hours from 4 September 2026. Eight Indonesian airports closed, 1,558 flights were cancelled or delayed and roughly 341,000 travellers were affected. Almost every report led with the stranded passengers. Almost none explained why an airport closes for ash at all.

The US Geological Survey counted 94 confirmed encounters between aircraft and volcanic ash from 1953 to 2009. Nine lost an engine in flight. Three lost all of them. None crashed.

The story

Anak Krakatau erupted continuously for about twenty five hours from 4 September

  • Eight Indonesian airports closed, 1,558 flights were cancelled or delayed, and roughly 341,000 travellers were affected. Every outlet led with the stranded passengers.

The fact under it that nobody led with is why an airport closes for ash. Not visibility. Volcanic ash is powdered rock; the burner section of a jet engine runs hotter than that rock's melting point, so ash entering the engine melts, then re-solidifies as glass on the cooler turbine blades just behind and chokes the engine. Weather radar cannot see ash, so the rule was never detection. It is avoidance, and the airports underneath the plume close.

That rule was written by two aircraft, over this same island. On 24 June 1982 a British Airways 747 with 263 people aboard flew into ash from Mount Galunggung and lost all four engines, falling 23,500 feet across about thirteen minutes before the crew restarted them and landed at Jakarta. Nineteen days later a second 747 flew into ash from the same volcano and lost three engines. It also landed at Jakarta.

So the closure this week is not caution. It is those two flights, still being obeyed, by the very airport that saved them.

A volcano in the Sunda Strait called Anak Krakatau erupted without stopping for 25 hours. The sound carried 700 kilometers. Ash climbed 15 kilometers over Sumatra

Ash is nearly invisible to the weather radar in an airliner's nose. A crew can fly into it in clear air and see nothing coming. What happens then is the reason those airports shut

Ash is powdered rock, and rock melts. A jet engine's burner runs hotter than that melting point, so the ash turns to liquid glass. It hits the turbine just behind, which is cooler, and freezes there on the blades. The engine closes like a blocked drain

We know exactly what that looks like because it happened over this same island. On the 24th of June 1982, a British Airways 747 carrying two hundred and sixty-three people flew into ash from Mount Galunggung. All four engines stopped

The aircraft fell 23,500 feet. For about 13 minutes, it was a glider. The crew restarted the engines and landed at Jakarta. Nineteen days later, a second 747 flew into ash from the same volcano and lost three engines. It landed at Jakarta, too

Those two flights wrote the rule book. Not detection, avoidance. Fly around the ash and close the airports underneath it. So this weekend was not an overreaction. It was 1982 still being obeyed
