Iran Says It Captured A US Drone. It Was Already Dead.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on 8 September 2026 that its navy had captured an advanced American unmanned underwater vehicle near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media identified it as an Anduril Dive-LD, an autonomous undersea vehicle, and Naval News assessed that the machine shown in the released footage matches that model.
US Central Command's account differs in every part except the object. It says the vehicle was an older Dive-LD, that it was defective and malfunctioning well before Iran announced anything, and that it had been essentially dead in the water for more than a day. A US official told Reuters it had failed while surveying regional waters, that it was an older model, and that it carried no sonar, no radar and nothing classified.
We cannot settle that. Nobody outside the two governments has examined the vehicle, and each side has an obvious reason to describe it the way it does.
But one fact survives the argument, because it appears in both accounts: an American autonomous vehicle sat powerless in the most contested waterway on earth for more than a day. That is not the part anyone is disputing. The story is not only that it was taken. It is that it was lost first, and that the losing was quiet.
