A $110 Billion Merger Just Cleared. One Term In It Is About CNN.
On Monday 21 September 2026, California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a settlement of the antitrust suit that twelve Democratic state attorneys general brought in late July against Paramount Skydance's purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal is worth more than $110 billion, and the settlement clears its path.
Bonta called it "a black and white meat and potatoes antitrust case". The number the case turned on: today only about 5% of the company's global film production happens in the United States.
What the states took in exchange, in his words: a floor of $300 million more every year on domestic production ($1.5 billion over five years); 30 films a year for the first two years and 32 for the next three; at least four of them independent; a commitment to honour collective bargaining agreements; an independent film fund; $9.5 million a year for workforce training; a condition that Paramount and Warner Bros. keep negotiating cable packages separately; and a trustee to monitor compliance, enforceable in court.
And one term that is not about films at all: a News Editorial Independence Board to support CBS News's and CNN's continued editorial independence.
That lands in a particular week. Reporters from CNN, Politico and MS NOW have been barred from the White House since 19 September.
