He Banned Three Networks. In The Same Answer: "You Need A Free Press."
On Friday 18 September 2026 the US president posted that he was banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, saying those outlets report "FICTION and LIES". Hours later, still that Friday, he took questions in the Oval Office. Asked how he squared the ban with the oath every president takes to uphold the Constitution and the First Amendment, he answered at length — and inside that same continuous answer he said: "you need a free press. You need a fair press and an honest press." Asked why he was doing it now, he said: "No, no reason."
On Saturday 19 September, journalists from all three organisations were turned away at the White House. CNN said a photographer and a reporter were refused entry; a reporter was told by a Secret Service agent that her badge had been deactivated. Politico and MS NOW said their journalists were turned away as well. All three say they are going to court. First Amendment scholars say a ban chosen this way cannot stand.
