They Tried To Cancel Anne Hathaway's 2018 Speech. It Backfired.

In July 2026, an 8-year-old Anne Hathaway speech resurfaced on X as if it were new — and the internet, Elon Musk included, piled on with boycott threats and "she's just a marionette." But the 2018 HRC National Dinner speech answers for itself. This is the full story in three chapters: the pile-on, the passage they're mad at (in full), and the pattern — ending on her own words: "myths are destroyed by the same thing that creates them... and says NO MORE." She said it in 2018. She'd say it again.

What the reel says

Transcribed from the published reel.

That myth is that gayness orbits around straightness, transgender orbits around cisgender, and that all races orbit around whiteness. July [music] 2026, an 8-year-old speech starts spreading on X. Millions of views passed [music] around as new.

Elon Musk calls her a marionette, says someone else wrote her script, that [music] she has, quote, a little bird brain. Tomi Lahren piles on. Boycott [music] threats trend.

All of it aimed at what you're about to hear. This myth is wrong. But this myth is too real for too many.

It is ancient, so it is trusted. It is a habit, so it's assumed to be the way things are. It's inherited, so it's thought immutable.

Its consequences are dangerous because it prioritizes a certain type of love, a certain kind of body, a certain kind of skin color, and does not value in the same way anything it deems to be other to itself. It is a myth that is with us from birth, and it is a myth that keeps money and power in the hands of the few instead of being invested in the lives of the free. What the outrage [music] clips never mention, why she was in that room.

Anne [music] Hathaway was there to accept the Human Rights Campaign's Ally for Equality Award, a cause she'd shown up for for years because of her own gay brother. This wasn't a script someone handed her. It was family.

named Ella. She named herself that after my movie Ella Enchanted. Um and in this note in this note Ella thanked me for my courage as an ally.

Ella, sweetie, I want to make something absolutely clear to you. It takes zero courage to love you. It does, however, take a lot of courage to get up and talk in front of a lot of people.

So, I put your note right next to my heart to give me extra strength. It's right here. And if this feels [music] familiar, it should.

In 2013, she won an Oscar, and the internet turned [music] on her overnight. They called it Hatha-hate. Whole essays asking [music] why everyone hated Anne Hathaway.

Her offense, then as now, being earnest in public. She took a year away. Then she just kept [music] working.

And I know that removing them is easier said than done. But I also know that myths are destroyed by the same thing that's that creates them. A community.

A community that believes. A community that is conscious. A community that claps back and says no more.

A community backed by the HRC melts. A new world will emerge forged from this community. From their size from your seismic imperative message that love is love.

Eight years since the speech. 13 since they first turned on her. She hasn't taken back a word.
