On Thursday, the president signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario. The order itself is short. It directs the Secretary of the Interior to update the Federal Geographic Names Information System, which is the database the United States government uses to write its own maps.
That is the whole mechanism, a federal naming database updated by one department inside one country. Lake Ontario is an international body of water. The United States shares every inch of it with Canada, and a change to an American database does not travel across the middle of the lake.
This is a lake that has most of its volume in the United States. The deepest parts of the lake sit in United States territory.
The name is much older than the argument.
