BRICS Didn't Launch A Currency. It Launched A Bypass.
Eleven leaders met at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on 12-13 September 2026 and adopted the New Delhi Declaration unanimously. Every headline said the same thing: a BRICS currency is coming for the dollar.
India chaired the summit. At India's own official media briefing, BRICS Sherpa Sudhakar Dalela said it plainly: "there is no proposal in the BRICS for BRICS currency as of now." Local-currency settlement, he said, is "complementary to global payment and settlement system" - not a replacement. A reporter in that room asked whether BRICS Pay would "automatically eliminate SWIFT." It was not the plan.
What was actually agreed is plumbing: interoperating India's UPI, China's CIPS and Russia's SPFS so banks can settle trade without routing messaging through SWIFT.
Meanwhile the slow number already moved. Foreign central banks now hold more gold than US Treasuries - the first time since 1996. The dollar's share of global reserves has slipped under 57%, down from 72% in 2001.
And on the same weekend the declaration was signed, President Trump - in Ireland - said more tariffs are coming, and that on cutting off trade with deficit nations he'd "have no choice."

The claim (title-grade)
BRICS did not launch a currency. It launched payment plumbing that routes around SWIFT — and India's own chair said the currency does not exist, on tape.

The reporting
TITLE (claim-first): BRICS Didn't Launch A Currency. It Launched A Bypass.
Loop seam: ends on "I'll have no choice." → cuts to beat 1, "eleven leaders lined up for a photograph."
How this was verified — the rest of the fact sheet
Honesty guards (from facts.md)
- Beat 12 must keep "Officially, no." The briefing's answer was complementary, not elimination.

What the reel says
Narration as scripted and voiced.
On Saturday, 11 leaders lined up for a photograph in New Delhi
Are the tariffs still in effect? Yeah, well we have a lot of tariffs. A lot more tariffs are coming.
That was Sunday on Air Force One. Nobody in Delhi said his name
The declaration they signed runs forty-five pages. It condemns unilateral tariffs and economic coercion, and it never names a country
Then every headline said the same thing, a BRICS currency coming for the dollar
India chaired this summit. Here is India's own briefing
You also asked a question about BRICS currency and I would like to say that there is no proposal in the BRICS for BRICS currency as of now.
No currency. What they are actually building is plumbing
India's UPI, China's CIPS, Russia's SPFS wire the national payment switches together, and banks settle trade without the messaging layer the dollar rides on
A reporter asked it plainly
The BRICS Pay, does it automatically eliminate SWIFT, or is this just going to be a competition that we'll be seeing?
Officially, no. Complementary, they called it. Not a replacement
But the slow thing already happened. Foreign central banks now hold more gold than they hold US Treasuries. First time since 1996
The dollar's share of world reserves slipped under fifty-seven percent. It was seventy-two percent in two thousand and one
No summit announced that. It moved quarter by quarter while everyone watched for a currency that does not exist
And on the weekend it was written down in Delhi, this was the answer from Ireland
Oh yeah, yeah, I'm gonna do that with some nations. I'll have no choice.
