Hurricane Lala passed 30 miles south of Hawaii's Big Island — the closest hurricane pass ever recorded there — and never made landfall. The rain came anyway: 43.54 inches at Laupāhoehoe, the third-wettest storm in Hawaii's history. Pāhala's 2,000 residents were cut off when Highway 11 washed away. One death confirmed: a 93-year-old woman in Nāʻālehu.

## The reporting

Claim (one per short): The closest hurricane pass ever recorded to Hawaii's Big Island never made landfall — and the RAIN still destroyed the island's south. The cone shows the wind; the water doesn't care.

## Transcript

Hurricane Lala came 30 miles from Hawaii's Big Island, the closest pass ever recorded. But the rain came ashore anyway, over 43 inches of it, the third wettest storm in Hawaii's history.
Wind gusts reached over 80 miles per hour, downing trees and power lines. But it was the rain, more than three feet in some places, that caused catastrophe. We're here at what little is left of Highway 11.
In Pahala, 2,000 people woke up trapped. The only road in washed away. Rescuers went in after a man swept from his home. Then the rescuers needed rescuing. And in Na 'alahu, the water took a 93 -year -old woman. The storm's one confirmed death.
I'm here in Pahala fronting the Ka 'u Hospital. This is a community of about 2,000 people that is now trapped. Overnight, firefighters brought several families to the Ka 'u District Gym, set up as a county shelter.
Here's what Lala leaves behind. The cone on the map measures wind. It's the water that kills. A hurricane that missed still drowned the south of an island.
But the bakery will come back. It's just going to take time and it's going to take a lot of work. Workers recovered a container, though, of the bakery's famous sweetbread that was still in perfect condition. So with that, they got to share it with the people in the recovering community.
