It stood for 123 years. It held the First Lady's offices and the White House movie theater. And it is gone. In its place, Donald Trump is raising a 90,000 -square -foot, $400 million ballroom. All of the glass on the sides is bulletproof. It's 999 people it can hold. This construction is in the backdrop of a government shutdown. Without approval from Congress, Judge Leon concluded that the preservationist group is likely to succeed on the merits of its claims because, quote, no statute comes close to giving the president the authority he claims to have. The White House did not immediately respond to. A federal appeals court has ordered an immediate halt to construction on the Trump administration's $400 million White House ballroom. In a two -to -one decision, a D .C. circuit panel ruled Friday that the president lacks the authority to build a 90,000 square foot ballroom. The administration went to the Supreme Court. On August 14th, the Justice Department claimed the president has total authority to renovate the White House as he sees fit, and told the justices the ballroom was already 65 % complete by its own count. The target for finishing it is this November. The Preservation Trust answered that the White House is racing to outrun judicial review so that by the time the court rules, the ballroom will be virtually impossible to deconstruct. On Friday, hours before the block was to take effect, Chief Justice Roberts pressed pause. Construction continues, pending further order. It is not a ruling. It is time. And the cranes are using it.
