On 25 August 2026, SpaceX and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry announced Starbase, Louisiana, a $100 billion launch site in Vermilion Parish on the Gulf Coast, and SpaceX's largest facility anywhere.
The scale is the story. The site runs to over 200 square miles. Starbase in Texas, the one everyone has seen, is a 1,000-acre complex, so Louisiana is more than a hundred times the footprint. At full buildout the plan is five launch complexes, each with two pads and a propellant farm, and more than a dozen launch towers. Elon Musk says it will ultimately enable "more than 30 Starship flights per day," making it "the biggest launch site on Earth."
SpaceX spent roughly seven years looking for somewhere this could work. The requirements are narrow: the pads, ample gas supply, and the right trajectories to fly every mission profile.
Construction is targeted to begin in 2027, with a first launch in 2029 at the earliest. SpaceX says the site will create at least 3,000 direct jobs; Musk has said the number could approach 10,000.
And the ground is not empty. Those roads and dock facilities served the offshore oil and gas industry for decades. The launch pads are going up on infrastructure the rigs left behind.

## What this story does not claim

NOT that construction has started. Target is 2027; first launch 2029 at the earliest. NOT that the 10,000 jobs figure is a commitment. 3,000 direct jobs is the stated floor; 10,000 is Musk's own projection in a promotional video. Attribute it to him, never to LED. NOT a precise size multiple. "Over 200 square miles" vs "1,000 acres" supports "more than a hundred times", not an exact "128×". NOT that 30 flights/day is scheduled. It is Musk's stated ultimate ambition at full buildout. No environmental claim either way — the wetlands question is real but out of scope here, and the reel must not imply the site is empty marsh OR that impacts are settled.
