# Saudi Arabia Was Attacked. The New Defence Pact Didn't Activate.

On 7 August 2026, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, using NATO Article 5 language: an armed attack on one is an attack on all.
Five weeks later it was tested. On 8 September Houthi missiles and drones wounded more than 70 people in southern Saudi Arabia and set fire to oil facilities. On 11 September the Houthis took Mayyun island in the Bab al-Mandab and a Saudi oil pipeline shut down. On 16 September Saudi air defence said it intercepted a drone before it reached Mecca's airspace, the first alert there in nearly a decade, and called the holy sites a red line.
The pact was not invoked. Not because anyone refused:
- Pakistan said on 10 September that no military response had been discussed, and that Riyadh had not asked for one. - Türkiye condemned the attacks but has not ratified the agreement; under its constitution the president cannot ratify a security pact without parliament, which may not vote until October. - The agreement itself names no threshold at which force is owed.
Separately, Saudi Arabia has sought Israeli INTELLIGENCE on Houthi deployments, mediated by US Central Command. That is intelligence sharing, not military intervention: no strikes, no troops. The two states have no diplomatic relations.
The Houthis deny targeting Mecca. Their spokesman says the targets were oil and military sites far from the holy places. His statement appears here in his own voice.

The Mecca drone was shot down by Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces. The viral version of this story inverts that and must not be followed. NOT that the Houthis targeted Mecca. That is a Saudi claim and the Houthis deny it. Both must appear, in that order, in consecutive beats. NOT that Pakistan or Türkiye refused. Neither was asked; one cannot yet ratify. "Allies did nothing" is the wrong frame and the reel must not use it. NOT a view on the Yemen war's merits, and no side is characterised as such.
