King Harald V of Norway died on Friday 28 August 2026 at 06:35, aged 89. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, was King Haakon VIII from that minute. Norway holds no coronation, so there was no ceremony and no gap.
The next day the new king recorded a memorial address from the Royal Palace. He sat at a desk with his father's framed photograph and two lit candles beside him. For most of it he did not address the country at all. He addressed his father, in the second person: "Kjaere faren min, takk for at du var en saa god pappa for Maertha og meg" - dear father of mine, thank you for being such a good dad to Maertha and me.
Then he turned to his mother. Queen Sonja had been a widow for one day. And 29 August was the day she and Harald married, 58 years earlier. "I dag er det 58 aar siden de giftet seg. Gratulerer med bryllupsdagen, kjaere mamma." Today it is 58 years since they married. Happy anniversary, dear Mum.
Harald came home from wartime exile as an eight-year-old on a quay in Oslo in 1945. He apologised to the Sami on behalf of the country. He wept with Norway after Utoya. His son said he united the country by putting into words who Norwegians are. Of the succession the new king said only: "Naa er det min tur." Now it is my turn.
Norway held his funeral at Oslo Cathedral on 30 August.
Speech: Det norske kongehus (the Royal House of Norway), 29 August 2026. Council of State footage via New York Post, 28 August 2026.

## The claim (one)

King Harald V of Norway died on 28 August 2026 at 06:35; his son was King Haakon VIII from that minute. The memorial address the new king recorded the next day fell on 29 August — Harald and Sonja's 58th wedding anniversary — and he used part of his first address as sovereign to wish his mother, a widow of one day, a happy anniversary.

## The angle

Every outlet led with "Norway's king dies, son takes the throne." The succession was instantaneous and constitutional, and the speech was not about it. For most of its length the new king does not address the nation at all: he addresses his dead father in the second person, and then his mother — on a date that turned a wedding anniversary into the day after a death.

## PRIMARY SOURCE (desk-verified, transcribed here)

Verbatim, from the recording The anniversary is SELF-SOURCED inside the primary. "58 years since they married," spoken on 29 August 2026, gives a wedding of 29 August 1968. No secondary source is needed and none is relied on.

## Also established

Haakon is 53; Harald was 89. Queen Mette-Marit and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra are named by the King in the same address — Ingrid Alexandra is the heir. The funeral service was held at Oslo Cathedral on 30 August 2026 (APT live coverage, upload dated 20260830, ~4h).

## Transcript

The king of Norway died on Friday morning at 6:35 Harald V was 89. His son Håkon was 53, and he became king in the same minute, because in Norway there is nothing in between.
The next day, the new king recorded an address from the palace. He sat at a desk with a photograph of his father beside two lit candles. And for most of it, he did not speak to the country at all. He spoke to his father in the second person.
He said, Dear father of mine, thank you for being such a good dad to Martha and me. He said his father was warm and safe, a funny grandfather and a husband who took care of them all.
Then he turned to his mother. Queen Sonja had been a widow for one day, and her son, in his first address as her king, told the country that this was the day they were married 58 years ago and wished her a happy anniversary.
Harald came home from the war as an eight -year -old boy on a quay in Oslo. He apologized to the Sami on behalf of the whole country. He wept with Norway after Utøya. His son said he united us by putting into words who we Norwegians are.
His father succeeded his father, who succeeded his father before that. The new king said only, now it is my turn. And the first thing he did with the job was use it to say happy anniversary to his mother.
