# He Said The Iran War Was Nearly Over. The Next Day The UN Published This.

On 16 September 2026, speaking to reporters beside his plane in Charlotte, North Carolina, the US president said the war with Iran was hopefully near its end and that Iran "very much" wants to make a deal. He also said Iran had contacted the United States directly.
Tehran has not confirmed that. A senior Iranian official said there will be no talks until Washington honours the terms of the deal signed in June.
The next day, the UN's Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran published its report on the war. It found reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed the war crime of launching indiscriminate attacks, in two strikes that killed at least 177 civilians: a primary school in Minab on 28 February, where more than 150 people died and about 120 of them were children, and a sports complex in Lamerd.
The same report found reasonable grounds to believe Iran's own government committed crimes against humanity, with killings by security forces "on a massive scale in all provinces" during its crackdown on protests. Both findings are in the reel because both are in the report.
The mission was created by the Human Rights Council in 2022 and is chaired by the Bangladeshi jurist Sara Hossain. Washington rejects the report. The findings are not legally binding and nobody is on trial; they could feed future court proceedings.
