In March 2025, in an address to a joint session of Congress, the US president told the people of Greenland "we need Greenland for national security" and "I think we are going to get it, one way or the other". In December 2025 he named a special envoy to Greenland and gave his reason: Russian and Chinese ships off the coast. "We have to have it."
In July 2026, at a NATO summit in Ankara, Denmark's prime minister Mette Frederiksen answered: "Greenland is, of course, not for sale... we are a sovereign state, and we need everybody to respect our territorial integrity and our sovereignty."
On Friday 18 September 2026 he announced a security agreement with Denmark. The United States will immediately begin developing a larger military presence on Greenland, and he says the deal gives the US permanent control of Greenland's security. The agreement bans any non-NATO base on the island, and a State Department official says it guarantees China and Russia cannot have one. It does not transfer the island: Frederiksen says the deal recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark, and that the three governments sign next week.
