# An American Summer Just Beat The Dust Bowl

For the first time on record, a summer in the Lower 48 ran hotter than the Dust Bowl summer of 1936.
NOAA puts June through August about four tenths of a degree Fahrenheit above the 1936 mark — a benchmark that had stood for ninety years. In the same week, the European climate service Copernicus said August was the hottest month it has ever measured anywhere on Earth.
That second record deserves a caveat, and most coverage skipped it: August came in one hundredth of a degree above July 2023, which is smaller than the uncertainty in the measurement. Statistically it is a tie, not a new record.
What is not in doubt is the level. August ran 1.65 °C above pre-industrial — well past the 1.5 °C line the Paris agreement was written to hold. El Niño contributes a tenth or two of a degree. The rest is the burning of fossil fuels.

## What this story does not claim
